The school field was adorned with vibrant red and white decorations, creating a festive atmosphere for Indonesia’s Independence Day celebration. On the morning of August 17, all the students and teachers of SMP Merdeka gathered to commemorate the special day. To add to the festivities, various traditional games were organized, and I decided to participate in one of the most beloved ones: the sack race.
After registering my name, I was given a rough burlap sack. My heart started to beat a little faster as I wasn't very confident in my jumping skills. Looking around, I saw my friends, Budi and Siska, also preparing at the starting line. The air was thick with both competition and cheerful laughter.
The referee blew the whistle, and we all began hopping as fast as we could inside our sacks. It was chaos and laughter from the very start. I saw some of my friends lose their balance and tumble to the ground almost immediately. I, myself, struggled to find my rhythm and fell behind. Budi, on the other hand, was incredibly agile and quickly took the lead. He hopped gracefully while I wobbled from side to side, trying my best not to fall.
A few moments later, Budi crossed the finish line and was met with a huge round of applause. We all cheered for him enthusiastically. I arrived shortly after, feeling completely out of breath but with a big smile on my face. Although I didn't win, I felt a sense of accomplishment for finishing the race and sharing in the laughter with all the other participants.
That sack race was more than just a competition; it was a truly meaningful experience. I learned that winning isn't the most important thing, but rather the spirit of togetherness and sportsmanship. The game reminded me that celebrating independence is about unity, working together, and enjoying every single moment with others, regardless of the outcome. It was a wonderful way to feel a sense of unity and patriotism.
